Leticia Rodriguez
Leticia Rodriguez is a prolific and experienced entertainer and has performed, directed and produced for over twenty years. Her musical passion is singing boleros y boleros tropical; world music for all generations.
"My 14-year old son... told me that after hearing this music live, he now wants to learn how to play trio style of music. From Jimmy Hendrix to Los Panchos. Your music is beautiful and the reminders of our stories so meaningful."
- Yolanda Padilla, audience member, 2007
Her career began as a professional dancer at the age of twelve. A graduate of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas, Ms Rodriguez excelled in the world of dance and theatre. She performed and choreographed over a fifteen-year span with several noteworthy dance and theatre companies; as well as holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin.
Subsequent to her career as professional dancer, Ms Rodriguez taught, choreographed and directed, "Believe in Me", a non-profit arts organization that modeled itself on the "National Dance Institute", an award winning character development program based on the performance arts. Ms Rodriguez created original theatrical productions performed by children during a ten-year span at the University of Texas Bass Concert Hall. If you can imagine four hundred children onstage at Bass Concert Hall, you get a glimpse of the scope of the work!
Currently, she is the Founder and Artistic Director, of Performance Encounters, whose works targets art with social conscience. For the past ten years, Ms Rodriguez has written, directed, produced and performed theatre performances for diverse audiences. The performance works cover topics on culture, family and social issues. Her latest production, "Home Entertainment 2009", received full audiences and wonderful reviews from Austin media.
For the past two years, Ms Rodriguez has performed the music of her heritage; boleros. Coming from an extended family of singer/songwriters, Ms Rodriguez has never been far from music. Boleros, a romantic form of latin music, is an integral part of the latin culture. Ms Rodriguez’ current mission is to bring the poetry and beauty of boleros to multicultural audiences. Her performances allow audiences to understand not only the beautiful harmonies and changes in tonality, but as importantly, the lyrical poetry inherent in boleros. She captures intergenerational audiences. Music composed in the early 1900s has stayed with the older generations, while younger generations are introduced to something perhaps entirely new.
